From Our Rector

Dear Friends in Christ,

We have made a wonderful new beginning in the Diocese of El Camino Real. At our annual Convention on Oct 26 and 27, we have significantly changed our Constitution and Canons, in order to create a diocese where each part is connected to the whole, and is responsible for well-defined tasks. Two bodies which have been separate for many years, the Corporation and the Diocesan Council, are now combined into one Board of Trustees. I am happy to tell you that Pat Williams was elected to this new Board, and will provide continuity from her year as chair of Council. Equally important is that our Bishop-elect, Mary Gray-Reeves, was invited by the Ecclesiastical Authority, to chair the convention. She gave a sermon at the opening Eucharist, and an Address on the second day, both of which you can read on the diocesan website www.edecr.org.

Bishop Mary (as she will be by the time you read this!) asked us to observe together a Year of Wonder, which she called a spiritual skill essential to Godly action. She hopes we can suspend both judgment and action in order to remain in God's presence for long stretches of time, and to be guided by the Spirit. She wants us to be free to wonder in God's presence, and to enjoy the landscape of peaceful inner stillness. Out of this time of wondering, she hopes that every congregation will have one new thought, one transforming thought that shifts something, and leads to a new action. She also said, we must be willing to risk, to fail, and to try again.

I am happy to report that the Presiding Bishop, Katherine Jefferts-Schori, asked to meet with clergy and diocesan leaders the day before the consecration of Bishop Mary. There was a 3 hour session with her at St. Stephen's, San Jose.

We hear that the consecration will be recorded, and DVDs will be made available. We are pleased and proud that our own Linda Ormiston has created such an elegant cope, mitre, chasuble and stole for Bishop Mary. Photos can be seen on the bulletin board next to the columbarium.

As I prepare for the seasons of Advent and Christmas, I find myself looking forward to the more contemplative feeling of our worship in Advent. In contrast to the public world, which speeds up between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we in the church slow down, and use these four weeks of Advent to reflect on the prophecies of salvation, to prepare our hearts for the birth of the Holy Child, and to savor the process of giving. I hope that you will find it possible to join in that slowing-down process this year: make it a point to come to church each Sunday, and be open to that landscape of inner stillness about which our new bishop speaks.

Christmas Pageants Past: Archives Display
by Norma Medlin

While preparations are going on at this minute for St. Thomas' Christmas Pageant of 2007, the archive committee would like to draw your attention to the Archive Memorial Display case to see pictures of pageants of the past as well as a description by family ministry director, Rosemary Halas Parker, on the commitments and contributions necessary to make our Christmas celebration at St. Thomas unique for viewers and participants. She adds:  "It is always a challenge but always rewarding.  After all the stress and excitement of planning, the pageant itself is always lovely, no matter what happens.  Little sheep will mysteriously lose their fleeces somewhere between "Hark the Herald" and the manger scene;  an angel will decide in the middle of dress rehearsal the he'd rather be a cow; shepherds will shush overzealous sheep; and the adults of St. Thomas will be once again blessed by the eccentric, spontaneous and unaffected ministry of the very young."

Advent and Christmas Events
by the Rev. Wendy Smith

Christmas Boutique -- Sun Dec 2, after each morning service

Once again on the First Sunday of Advent, Dec 2nd, we will have a Christmas Boutique after both morning services. All parishioners are invited to make, sew, paint, sculpt, glue, knit, bake, or otherwise craft items for our boutique. These could be Christmas ornaments, cards or decorations, or gift items, including plants and home-made goodies. Cornwell Scribeworks cards and calligraphy will be there as well. Proceeds of the sales go to the operating budget of St. Thomas. Volunteers are needed to help set up, to be cashiers, and to put prices on items. Please let me know if you can help!

Advent Lessons and Carols -- Wed evening, December 12th, at 7:30 pm

This will be in form, a traditional service of Lessons and Carols, spoken and sung in alternation. As in previous years, the Lessons will be poems and short prose selections which reflect the themes of Advent: hope, waiting, light in the darkness, preparation, redemption. We will invite sign-ups to read these lessons on Dec 2nd and 9th. The lovely carols of Advent will alternate with the readings.

Christmas Eve Family Service -- Mon Dec 24th, at 4:00 pm

This is the service at which we will have our Pageant, telling the story of the birth of Jesus, with children in the starring roles. We will sing the familiar carols of Christmas, we will celebrate a simple Christmas Eucharist, and we will conclude our worship in 50 minutes, so that you can drive home before dark! Therefore we invite people of all ages to share in this joyful beginning of the 12 days of Christmas.

Festive Choral Eucharist -- Mon Dec 24th, 11:00 pm

This is our main event, a festive candlelit service, preceded by a Carol Sing at 10:30 (you are welcome to enter and be seated at any time from 10:15 on). The choir prepares special music, the birth of our Savior will be greeted with hymns, praise, proclamation and prayers, our special Creche will be on display, and in the sermon I will explore the mystery of God's love in sending his Son. We will share Holy Communion, and afterwards, we will have cookies and hot cider in the narthex.

Christmas Day -- Tue Dec 25th, 10:00 am

This is the quietest celebration of Christmas that we have, in the stillness of Christmas morning. We will have hymns, sermon, and Holy Eucharist, in gratitude for the greatest gift we receive: Jesus, our savior and Lord.

Twelfth Night -- Sat Jan 5th, 5:00 pm

This is the 12th night of Christmas, when we re-enact and celebrate the visit of the Three Wise Men to Bethlehem. This special candlelight service does not include a Eucharist, so the whole event only lasts about 45 minutes. The liturgy emphasizes the passing on of the Light of Christ from the apostles to their successors, and on down to us today. We will also eat Epiphany cakes, which leads to the crowning of the King and Queen of Epiphany, and we will each choose a Star to guide us in the coming year. This service is especially appropriate for children.

Diocesan Youth Mission Trips for 2008
by Rosemary Parker

Planning for a Diocesan mission trip is underway! Bishop Mary, Leann Brooks and Robin Denney are coordinators for next summer’s Sierra Service Project trip, an annual Diocesan service opportunity in which youth spend time serving in Native American communities.

The first trip will be held June 29- July 5 and offered to high school students. Experienced counselors, including Bishop Mary, will accompany the youth. The second trip will run July 14-19 and will be the first mission trip in our Diocese that is designed specifically for junior high school students. In each of these mission trips, students will serve by repairing homes in the communities they visit.

More information about these and other Diocesan service opportunities will be coming soon!

PEP Talk -- "In community we have love, through community we have strength."
by Pat Dare

13th Annual St. Nicholas Feast, Saturday, December 8th, 5:30 pm, Cowans Hall

This year’s St. Nicholas Feast will emphasze the “spirit of sharing” similar to the making of “Stone Soup” that was served at our recent Stewardship Luncheon. However, instead of just providing a “stone”, PEP will provide a choice of sumptuous main entrée that will befit our holiday celebration. Bread and drinks will also be provided. We ask that you bring a side dish such as appetizers, salads, vegetables, or desserts to share in complementing the feast.

The evening will have many program activities that should appeal to both young and old:

We will be selling admission tickets to help determine how many to prepare for at the feast. Ticket prices are $5 per person and those 8 years and under will be admitted free. Part of the income from ticket sales will go to SMUM. Tickets sellers will be available after each service and at the church office.

Upcoming Activities:

Planning Meetings, Dec. 4th & Jan. 8th, 7:30 pm, in the Disciples Room

At the December meeting, we will work on plans to put on the St. Nicholas Feast, the Christmas Midnight Service and 12 Night Reception. At our January meeting, we will plan our 2008 activities schedule and plan our support of the Annual Parish Meeting. If you would like to help, or have any ideas that you would like us to consider, please come to the meeting. The work is both fun and spiritually rewarding.

Observing Advent at Home

One of the best ways of teaching faith to children is by doing faith. This Advent, consider teaching -and learning from– your children through small family rituals that honor the season.

Many families make Advent wreaths together and say special Advent prayers each night at dinner. Consider assembling a Jesse Tree in your home or just sing Advent carols together.

Our parish library is full of great Advent resources for families. Ask Rosemary Parker or Carol Campbell, our parish librarian, for suggestions.

Calling All Angels!

Advent Angels is an intergenerational secret pals program that will last throughout Advent.

Last Sunday, on Advent 1, Angels had their first Sunday of secret deliveries to their unknowing Angel pals! The secret gift exchange will continue on each Sunday in Advent. Advent Angels will reveal their true identities to each other at a reception on 4th Advent (December 23rd) after the 10:30 service and Pageant.

Let’s Put on a Christmas Pageant!

Everyone is warmly invited to the annual St. Thomas Christmas Pageant on December 23rd at 10:30 am! This year’s Pageant is called A Welcome for Baby Jesus and will replace the sermon. Adults and teens are invited to help out behind the scenes.

Please see the Pageant rehearsal schedule below.

Vestry Notes
by Fran Hostettler and Ruth Hoffman,
with additional editing for publication here

September 18, 2007

FINANCE REPORT: Jim Cobb reported that pledges looked acceptable for the month of August and the totals for the year-to-date are good. The Finance Committee has been asked to review a solar proposal and will meet with the Akeena representatives to talk about details. Planning for the 2008 budget has begun.

STEWARDSHIP: Fulvia Govetto, Chair of the Stewardship Committee, discussed the plans for the Stewardship Drive. The theme for this year’s drive is “Living Bread—Food for the Hungry Soul”. Activities start October 7. The Stewardship Luncheon with “Bread and Stone Soup” and a budget presentation will be October 21. Pledge Sunday is October 28. Time-and-Talent donations should be considered. Wendy responded that there will be a celebration of significant birthdays (parishioners reaching 80 years and above), with a focus on recognition of what these folks have given in terms of gifts of time, talent, and general contributions to the life of the parish.

PLANNED GIVING: Jon Aderhold reviewed plans for Planned Giving and the structures of the proposed Endowment Fund. More needs to be done to evaluate different choices, including choices of investment companies. Wendy thanked Jon for his presentation.

VESTRY NOMINATIONS: The outgoing Vestry members—Pat Williams, Chris Schmidt, Wendy Tracy and Elaine Timm—will serve as the Nominating Committee.

TRANSFER CENTER: Pam Storrer reported on the progress of the Transfer Center. This program will begin operation on October 12 with continued service on the 2nd and 4th weekends of each month.

COMMISSIONS:

FUNDRAISING: The Nite in N’Orleans fundraiser did extremely well, surpassing expectations and everyone had a good time. Wendy Tracy thanked all who helped, with special mention of PEP for its organization and for Chris Schmidt and C.J. Gomez who enthusiastically announced the basket contents for the bidding. The Vestry applauded Wendy and her committee for all of the hard work.

RECTOR’S REPORT: Wendy reported that our outreach worker, Emma Valdez, is working very well. She has provided significant help to ODB patrons.

Wendy also announced that Sheldon Hutchison has requested to return to St. Thomas as a non-stipendiary priest. He will occasionally serve as Celebrant and/or Preacher.

20th Annual Crèche Exhibit -- Sat–Wed, December 1st–5th, noon–9 pm
by The Rev Wendy Smith and Carol Campbell, edited for publication

Once again this year, we expect the St. Thomas Crèche will be part of the Exhibit at the Mormon Church in Palo Alto, at 3865 Middlefield Road, one block north of East Charleston. The exhibit will be open from 12 noon until 9:00 pm, Saturday–Wednesday, December 1st–5th. It includes 500 Nativity scenes from 65 countries and holiday music as well. This is a wonderful event for people of all ages. We believe our crèche is the only one from a local church that is invited back year after year. Of course, our crèche will return to us in time for our Christmas services later in the month!

People of St. Thomas
by the Rev. Wendy Smith, edited for use here

We congratulate Michael Ridgway on being approved as a candidate for Holy Orders by the standing Committee on November 8th. Michael is in his last year at the School for Deacons.

We congratulate Pat Williams on being elected to the Board of Trustees of our diocese, at Convention on Oct 27th. She will provide much needed continuity from the work of Diocesan Council this last year, to the new structure of the Board of Trustees.

Linda Ormiston was one of the important people at the consecration of Bishop Mary Gray-Reeves on Nov 10th. Linda designed and sewed the cope, mitre, chasuble and stole in which the Bishop was vested in the service.

Our Senior Warden, Pam Storrer, saved a life on November 4th. She was attending Calvary, Santa Cruz, to help them start a Transfer Center, when one of the chalice-bearers collapsed from a heart attack. Pam did mouth to mouth resuscitation until the paramedics arrived. Thanks be to God for her quick action and knowledge of CPR!

A large number of people came to Lillian Pang's memorial service. Lillian had been active in many local organizations, from the Sunnyvale Historical Society to the American Heart Association to the Cupertino Senior Center, and was remembered fondly.

St. Thomas was represented well at Diocesan Convention, not only by our delegates and clergy, but also by Carol and Dave Campbell with the Resource Center display, and Pam Storrer with a Transfer Center display.

23 parishioners who are 80 or older responded to my invitation to participate in the Celebration of Significant Birthdays on October 28th.

It's "ODB XMAS" Goodie bag time again!
by Jan Camp

It's the gathering of donations time for Our Daily Bread's "goodies" bags!

Again we'll be distributing the "goodies" to all the adult diners, and small toys, like Beanie Babies, to the children. The bags will include the toiletries that you and we save all year for this occasion, plus some extras to put smiles on their faces. Please mark “ODB XMAS” on bags and put them in or by the box labeled “ODB” in the Narthex of the sanctuary, or bring them to the church office by Friday, December 14.

Our crew of workers will bag these items between the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services on December 16. You are all invited to take part in this fun and lively activity.

Men and women need almost the same toiletries, except for the obvious, like shavers and shaving cream for the men.

The extras they like receiving are: candy, gum, granola bars, large tooth pastes, talcums, soaps, shampoos, combs, dental floss, colognes, and scarves.

We'll need your almost new Beanie Babies, or new similar toys.

Homeless people need more practical items, like sweat shirts, tee shirts, new socks, briefs, knit watch hats, and gloves. They receive the normal "goodies" as well. At least thirty of these super bags will be prepared. These items get distributed all year, both to our needy homeless diners and to our Social Ministry recipients.

We'll be traditional about serving turkey at our Thanksgiving meal on November 21. We use turkeys all year, so your extras can be put into our walk-in freezer. For Christmas dinner on Monday, December 24, we'll serve boneless ham, so we're in need of donations for that meal.

Thanks for the great support you've been giving our diners over these almost twenty-five years!

Restoring the beauty of our altar panels (See pictures)
by Joe Gutierrez, edited for use here

Brian Weinstein, Art Handling and Restoration expert, has been working here at St. Thomas for about three weeks. Brian was commissioned because our beautiful altar panels were in dire need of restoration. Rev. Wendy has had this on her “to-do” list for at least 10 years. Kind and generous gifts from the Reverend Wendy Smith, who donated in memory of her father Martin Smith, and a gift from Mary Brodd, fund most of the restoration project. The balance of the costs will be paid from Memorial Funds.

The well-known and highly regarded artist Keith Boyle created our altar panels. Keith was born in Ohio in 1930 and taught at Stanford University from 1962 to 1988. He had one-man shows at the De Young Museum, Stanford Univ., S.F.MOMA, Smith-Anderson Gallery, and the San Jose Museum of Art. His art was described as “deliberate, methodical and inspired”.

Due to years of exposure to the sun, from the clerestory windows, the original colors have faded. Years of handling, moving them back and forth, have actually rubbed the color away from the edges of some of the panels.

A good art restorer must know and understand how the original artist used his/her medium. Much of the skill is in knowing how to match colors perfectly and how to apply the color so that the new work blends into the original artist’s handiwork. He must be able to bring the original colors back to life or “resurrect” the painting’s color and brilliance. Brian is applying an exact color-match over the paint that has faded or has been rubbed away. This takes skill, experience, and careful use of tools and paint. Brian is not adding new ideas, new images, or new colors to Keith’s art. He is carefully turning the clock back, 40 years! Brian started with the green, Pentecost-season, panels because they were the panels in the worst condition.

He is quietly working in the east aisle of the church so that at the end of his workday he can hang the panels back on the altar wall and we can use them while he works. After he has restored the colors he will apply a coat of clear UV protection so that the colors will not easily fade. He has also devised a new way to hang the panels so that they do not twist or warp. He will do this by making a system of cleats that support the panels over their full length. This will straighten the panels as they hang. Brian volunteered to retouch the white altar walls behind the panels so that they will hang on fresh new painted surfaces. We appreciate this gift of extra time, material and work very much.

Our 40-year anniversary has been highlighted by many special events and this exciting restoration of our art treasure will definitely be one of these special events.

Thank You, Rev. Wendy, and Thank You, Mary Brodd!

Stewardship Drive -- There’s still time to pledge
by the Rev. Wendy Smith

As of the newsletter deadline (Nov 6th), we have received 88 pledges, for which we are grateful to the 88 individuals and households who have made pledges for 2008. We are hopeful that 20 to 25 more pledges will arrive before December 4th, when the Vestry will approve the 2008 budget. Of course we will gladly receive your pledge after that date . . .. however our planned expenditures for next year, especially for a part-time youth director, and more hours for our Administrator, will be based only on the pledges we have received by Dec 5th. Your prayerful and timely response to this call will be much appreciated!

The First Christmas: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus’ Birth, by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan. The authors show how history has biased our reading of the nativity story as it appears in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. They explore the beginning of the life of Christ, peeling away the sentimentalism that has built up over the last two thousand years around this most well known of all stories to reveal the truth of what the gospels actually say. They show that the Christmas story, read in its original context, is far richer and more challenging that people imagine. (from Harper’s website)

In the Beginning: Creation spirituality for the days of Advent, by Donald Schmidt, and Awaiting the child: An Advent Journal, by Isabel Anders. Both of these books are daily readings for each day of Advent.

Faith In Action Men’s Rotating Shelter Success
by Rich Randolph

October 2007 again brought new guests to St. Thomas. Coming for shelter, nourishment companionship and escaping despair, nearly a dozen men called Cowans Hall their home. Sponsored by Faith in Action, a Cupertino Community Services outreach, the shelter has grown over the last sixteen years to include 12 congregations, service organizations and businesses engaging numerous volunteers in a variety of roles. St. Thomas hosted the lodging, provided shoppers for lunch and breakfasts, and organized over one hundred and fifty dinner meals complete with a personal representative of our parish to greet the men and share conversation during dinner.

I want to personally thank everyone who participated:

Chris and Randi Schmidt, Walt Modic, Jan Camp, Courtney Tan,
Jan Letson and her sister Jean, Elaine Timm, Harvey Brenner,
Ray and Wendy Barnes, Evelyn Andrews and Carolyn Wallace,
Lester Gadson, Bob Williams, Meredith Ross, Fran and John Hostettler,
Betsy Randolph, Pam Storrer, Anil and Sandy Phailbus,
Robert Field, LaVerne and Ollie Martin, Mimi Daw,
The St. Thomas Choir,
Fulvia Govetta and Tricia Pietrzyk, Linda Alcock,
Margaret Jungling and Hathalie Monfort,
Michelle and Pat Turnbull, and Christina Seymour.

ODB Coordinator David Barnes also helped and coped graciously
with the inevitable wrinkles change brings.

The combined efforts of our congregation and surrounding community meant that during the month nearly ONE THOUSAND additional hearty meals blessed the dozen men endeavoring to improve their quality of life. Without a doubt, the conversations shared gave me renewed gratitude for my own blessings of employment, health, support and optimism, as well as a wider fellowship in knowing that so many people care enough to include the shelter guests in their cooking, shopping and prayers.

October 2008 is our next scheduled hosting of the Rotating Shelter. Sandyha Phailbus has been Co-chair for two years now and is well prepared to take charge and recruit another Co-chair. It is a heart warming and mind-expanding ministry! Talk to Sandyha or Rev. Wendy if you feel moved to share your leadership talent and put your faith into action.

Thank you for making this year a fulfilling, hospitable, pleasantly memorable one for me as well.

St. Thomas Safe Haven Child Transfer Center
by Pam Storrer

After watching the movie Elizabeth I: The Virgin Queen, this thought occurred to me—If there had been a transfer center in the 1500’s, perhaps Anne Boleyn would have not been executed by Henry VIII and Elizabeth would have had both of her parents in her life. That probably would have changed history. Currently we are changing the history of the lives of two children and hopefully by the time of this writing, yet another child’s history will change. How wonderful this is! At the first transfer, referring to the center, a child said to his Dad “I wasn’t afraid”. The Dad’s response was “You shouldn’t be. These are good people”.

On Sunday, November 4th, I was at Calvary Episcopal Church in Santa Cruz. I spoke at the Sunday morning forum about St. Thomas’ center. Fran Johnson from Calvary is opening a center at Calvary! It is our hope that there will be more centers opening in the Diocese of El Camino Real and we all can work in a partnership.
