The celebration started with an Evensong Service at Saint Thomas at 3:00 pm.
Jim, as lay reader, led the service using the Order of Service from the old prayer book similar to that used
by Clarence Urmy when he had conducted the first services that had led to the founding of St. Thomas as a mission.
It was also fitting that some of Clarence Urmy's descendant were able to attend and help us to commemorate those
services. Wendy read a homily sent in from our second rector, the Rev. William Cowans, who was unable to attend
due to an early snow storm that had blocked his passage here from Reno.
After the Evensong Service had concluded, the celebration continued with a banquet at the Historic Del Monte
Building in downtown Sunnyvale. It also happens to be in the nearby vicinity of Stowell Hall where the first
Evensong had been conducted. After a fine meal, we had a short program starting with Grace giving a vocal
presentation of a song that was written by Clarence Urmy. Then Gage gave a talk on "O Pioneers!" which gave us
some insight of Clarence Urmy's life and how he had assisted in the founding of St. Thomas. After his talk,
Gage continued with a round of acknowledgements of people for their help with the year long centennial
celebrations. Next, he introduced the Hon. Jim Griffith, Vice Mayor of Sunnyvale, who followed with
the recognition of key members of St. Thomas for their contributions to the community and then proceeded
with the presention of a proclamation to St. Thomas congratulating us for our contributions to the
community and for achieving this historical centennial milestone.
